“I’m sorry, Antoine. I have no idea why…” He coughed up blood and fell over. Whether he was dead or not I could give a damn. Shaking free from the bewildered men I slid over, removed Lucien’s cursed sword, and cradled my Marie. I prayed to God that the pirate’s blow had missed her heart. I babbled inconsolably as I took her into my arms and tried to stop the bleeding. Insanely, I tried to give her water and breathe for her, knowing it was all in vain as her remaining red blood ran from her wound and trickled down the deck.
